It has to be in brown paper yard waste bags, the kind any hardware store sells. Not plastic bags, not barrels, not loose piles. Yard waste goes to a composting facility, and plastic cannot go through that process, so a plastic bag of leaves is contaminated the moment it arrives.

What counts: leaves, grass clippings, garden trimmings, small branches and brush.

What does not: soil, sod, rocks, stumps, treated or painted lumber, and branches thick enough to need a chainsaw. For those, a dumpster is usually the better answer. Call and we will tell you which size.

Massachusetts banned yard waste from landfill and incineration years ago, which is why it cannot simply go in your trash tote.
