Why you cannot just leave it at the curb. Massachusetts banned mattresses and box springs from disposal in November 2022. They cannot go in a landfill or an incinerator, so every one has to be taken to a facility that pulls it apart and recycles the steel, foam and fabric separately. That handling is what the $55 covers, and it is why no hauler in this state can take a mattress as ordinary trash.
What helps: keep it dry. Bring it into the garage or wrap it in plastic if rain is forecast the night before. A soaked mattress costs more to handle and sometimes cannot be recycled at all.
