What is backdoor or in-driveway trash service?

It is trash and recycling collection from where you actually keep your totes rather than from the curb. Our crew comes up the driveway, takes the totes to the truck, empties them and puts them back where they found them. You never move them.

The service goes by several names depending on who is describing it. Backdoor service is the industry's usual term. You will also see walk-up, carry-out and backyard service. We call it in-driveway pickup, and they all mean the same thing.

Who it is for. It started as something arranged for older customers and people with a disability, and that is still a large part of it. But the people who ask us about it most are:

• Anyone with a long, steep or gravel driveway: pushing a full 96-gallon tote up a slope in February is genuinely hard
• Households where nobody is home the night before to put totes out by 7 a.m.
• Seasonal and second homes where nobody is there at all
• People who simply do not want two totes standing at the end of the drive every week

It runs in all 28 towns we serve, on the same day as curbside. Two differences: who walks the totes down, and that recycling is every other week unless you upgrade.
